New York Cycling Race Canceled After Three Die in Two Crashes
The organizer of an international cycling race during which three people died in accidents canceled the event and said Monday he will never stage such an event again.
Jack Papa, organizer of the Bud Light 24 Hour Challenge, said he is devastated by two accidents that occurred midway through the race on Sunday, killing two cyclists and one motorist.
“Something like this you carry around the rest of your life.”
He said that he had planned to retire after this year’s race anyway, because it was too stressful to organize. There was no chance he could do it again after the deaths, Papa said.
Killed in the accidents were cyclists Albert Lester and Andrew Spiller and driver Jason Lamphere.
