Banks in Las Vegas Criticized: Community groups in the city issued a report accusing banks of failing to provide enough home loans to minority and low-income residents. Among the banks most harshly criticized was the Nevada unit of Los Angeles-based First Interstate Bancorp, which the group said had made only three home loans in the city’s largest minority area. A First Interstate executive in Nevada said the bank has been working with community groups there to develop a program to finance affordable houses and apartments. The report by the group, called the Las Vegas Alliance for Fair Banking, follows rioting in April in the city in response to the Rodney G. King beating verdicts.
