A BIRD IN HAND: Many environmentalists in Orange County say they are concerned that Ross Perot’s development company graded the nesting grounds of a rare Texas bird in 1990 after it was proposed as an endangered species. They see him as no fan of the Endangered Species Act, and worry what he’d do about the California gnatcatcher if elected, which local Audubon activist Pete DeSimone says “would be disastrous.” . . . Adds a federal wildlife official: “You may think development here is bad, but Texas is a whole ‘nuther story.”
