GM Announces Layoffs: General Motors Corp. will lay off 800 workers at its North Tarrytown, N.Y., assembly plant for an indefinite period and cut production of its minivans by nearly one-third starting Aug. 3. GM spokeswoman Peg Homes said the entire second shift at the plant will be eliminated because of disappointing sales of the plastic-bodied Chevrolet Lumina APV, Pontiac Trans Sport and Oldsmobile Silhouette minivans, first introduced for the 1990-model year.
