Bankruptcy Filings Hit Record High: Americans filed a record number of applications for bankruptcy protection during the first quarter of this year, the American Bankruptcy Institute said. It said 252,733 individuals and businesses filed for protection from January through March, up from 230,723 during the first three months of 1991. Still, the 9.5% increase was well below the 20.5% advance during the same quarter of 1991. ABI said business filings for the quarter totaled 18,760, a 5.3% increase from a year ago. Non-business filings totaled 233,973, up 9.8% from 1991.
