BELGRADE : Targeting Communists
Serbian opposition forces have called for a massive anti-Communist demonstration Sunday--which should provide the first real test of public resolve to tough out U.N. sanctions.
The trade ban, oil embargo and severed transportation links imposed May 30 have begun to inconvenience Serbs, causing some to question the policies of nationalist President Slobodan Milosevic.
The international community considers Milosevic chiefly responsible for a year of warfare that has killed 16,000. But Milosevic’s Socialist Party has warned that any attempt to topple the leadership would spark a Serb-versus-Serb civil war.
With no strong opposition figure waiting to take over, some fear the ouster of Milosevic would prompt a military coup and a further escalation of violence.
Amid the growing discontent, thousands of people conducted a peace march through Belgrade over the weekend.
