PUC to Issue Ruling on Caller ID: The California Public Utilities Commission is expected today to issue its long-awaited ruling on Caller ID, a controversial telephone service proposed by Pacific Bell and smaller phone companies. In January, Administrative Law Judge John Lemke recommended that the commission reject the service, which would display the caller’s number on a small box attached to subscribers’ phones. Consumer advocate groups say Caller ID would pose privacy problems for customers.
