Ventura : Task Forces Against Racism Planned

Share

A community meeting about racism in the city of Ventura will be held Thursday.

The purpose of the meeting, which is being sponsored by the Ventura Ministerial Assn., is to create six task forces that will monitor conditions and take action, according to a written statement from the association.

Clergy, local leaders and residents will participate in the task forces, which are being formed in response to the Los Angeles riots that followed the not-guilty verdicts in the Rodney King beating trial, said the Rev. Richard Weston-Jones, minister of the Unitarian Universalist Church.

“This is designed to bring people together who want to work” against racism in the schools, in politics and in other areas of society, Weston-Jones said.

Each task force will concentrate on a particular issue: education, police relations, political empowerment, cross-cultural dialogue, employment or homelessness. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. at Holy Cross School auditorium, 183 E. Main St.
