The Canyon Country Chamber of Commerce is seeking support to establish a local fairgrounds in the Santa Clarita Valley.

Jack Watkins, president of the chamber, said he will meet with representatives of the five local chambers of commerce Tuesday to discuss the idea of buying an 18-acre parcel off Lost Canyon Road that his group now rents for the annual Frontier Days festival at a cost of $80,000. The event makes a profit of about $20,000 annually for the chamber.

The land would be used for the festival and for other community events, he said.

“There’s a fairgrounds . . . in the Antelope Valley, and we’re big enough now to have our own,” Watkins said.

To raise money to purchase the property, Watkins said he will work with developers and officials of Santa Clarita and Los Angeles County.

Watkins said Assemblywoman Cathie Wright (R-Simi Valley) has agreed to sponsor legislation to establish the fairgrounds, which would be the 51st in the state. Wright could not be reached for comment.
