“PEOPLE WHO HIT THINGS.” Xylo. Clover Eclectic CLO-ED 010. The things Xylo--a percussion quartet--hits on this disc range from wood blocks to electronic controllers, in classics such as Cage’s “Second Construction” and Reich’s “Music for Pieces of Wood” as well as more recent works like Xyloite Rick Kvistad’s aggressive pulse teaser “Rip-Off” for drums and Larry London’s jazzy “Starry Nights and Doggy Days” for mallet instruments. In such a strong and flavorful context, two novelty fox trots from the ‘20s for xylophone seem to say more about the limitations of the repertory than its openness, despite the bright bravura of soloist Perry Dreiman.
