Uncrowded Garden Shows Experienced Landscaper

From the Washington Post

You can always spot a wise and experienced gardener. He does not crowd his plants. He does not jam things in. He knows that the roses have plenty of space in August and he knows they will need every inch of it within the next two years.

He does not plant “just eight little clumps as a token” of irises or anything else. He does not squeeze in a few dozen pansies four inches from the row of irises. He knows the irises will bulge out like series of bushel baskets, and he knows every pansy will turn into a 12-inch globe. So he does not get started on the course that will lead to frantic adjustments.
