Rail Strike Could Shut Pennsylvania Station: Philadelphia’s major rail center might shut down if Amtrak workers strike Wednesday as threatened, officials said. No trains out of Penn Station were canceled over the weekend, a Penn Station official said. Amtrak officials feared that pre-strike activity might force work stoppages as early as Sunday. Labor and management teams worked through the weekend in Washington to try to hammer out a contract to avert a threatened strike by Amtrak and Conrail workers at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday. If workers strike, cancellations would begin with trains originating Wednesday. Included would be trains that run between California and Chicago, Chicago and Eastern cities, Florida and the Northeast, New Orleans and New York, and Washington and Montreal.
