OCCUPATION: GEM/JEWELRY APPRAISER

Share
Researched by LEE ROGERS / Los Angeles Times

Name: David R. Boggess

Company: West Coast Gemological Laboratories

Thumbs up: “I’m meeting people in a unique situation, where I’m not trying to get them to buy or sell something. I’m providing a very personal service and I end up seeing a personal side of my clients, especially in the case of famous people, such as actors or actresses. Of course, I also get to see some great jewelry in the process.”

Thumbs down: “When I have to give people bad news, that they have been taken. Or, when they come to me destitute, desperate to sell the jewelry.”

Advice: “In the jewelry appraisal business, it’s commonplace for the appraiser to buy or sell the jewelry appraised. I think that in order to tell someone the truth, you can’t have your fingers in all three pies. In order to be impartial, you have to strictly appraise and know what you’re doing.”
