William H. Tooley; Pediatrician, Leader in Neonatology

William H. Tooley, 66, a pediatrician and lung specialist who helped develop life-saving techniques for premature babies. Tooley was one of the foremost figures in the field of neonatology--the care of premature infants with birth weights of less than 2 pounds. He made improvements to respirators that allowed the undersized infants to breathe and lowered the risk of deadly respiratory distress syndrome. Tooley was a native of Berkeley. He received his medical degree from UC San Francisco, where he taught for 30 years. In San Francisco on Wednesday after a long illness.
