SIMI VALLEY : Panel Seeks Support in Countering Gangs

Share

A Simi Valley gang task force called Monday for more support from the public and private sectors to help stem increasing gang activity in the city.

The suggestion was among the task force’s broad range of recommendations made in a presentation to the City Council.

The group also called for expanding drug prevention programs in the schools and forming a volunteer parent organization that would act as a support group for troubled youth.

The gang task force, made up of a dozen public and private community leaders, was formed in January.

Since December, 1989, there have been six gang-related drive-by shootings, most recently in July, 1991. No one was killed in the incidents.

However, these incidents, combined with a 53% increase last year in gang-related activities--such as graffiti-painting, tire slashings and vehicle break-ins--prompted the formation of the task force.
