ANAHEIM : Trekkies Beam Up in Full Regalia

For the uninitiated wandering anywhere near the Anaheim Convention Center, Sunday’s powerful temblors could have been mistaken for an earthly crash of the Starship Enterprise.

Fans of the movie and television “Star Trek” episodes--hundreds dressed in intergalactic costume--descended on the convention complex for a one-day extravaganza to celebrate their mysterious bonds with Capt. Kirk, Dr. Spock and the starship crew.

For Jonathan Lane of Chatsworth, all decked out in his red-and-black crewman’s uniform, the “25-Year Mission” convention represented a much appreciated 11th-birthday present.

“I’ve been a fan for the past two years,” said Lane, his light hair slicked straight back in the fashion of starship crew member. “It’s kind of neat.”

Unperturbed by the early-morning rumblings, many waited in line for up to two hours before the convention doors swung open at 1 p.m. and they got their chance to see the real Kirk and Spock characters, actors William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy.

“We didn’t think twice about coming,” said 26-year-old Glenn Kelly of Mission Viejo, dressed in the role of spaceship cadet. “I like the techno-futuristic aspect of it. It represents a gentler, nicer world.”
