World IN BRIEF : ITALY : Premier Appoints a New Government

Socialist Prime Minister Giuliano Amato named the country’s 51st administration since World War II. Its swearing-in ended a political void created when a disaffected population registered a huge protest vote in last April’s general election. The government will have to deal with the Mafia, reduce the budget deficit and turn the economy around in time to meet European Community targets for economic union. It is smaller than its predecessor and includes more ministers from outside Parliament.
