Greenpeace Activists Trap Norwegian Ship in Whaling Protest
Greenpeace activists trapped a Norwegian whaling ship on Scotland’s River Clyde on Tuesday by manacling themselves to a drawbridge in protest against Norway’s decision to resume commercial whaling.
Other campaigners of the environmental group had earlier chained themselves to the harpoon gun and bridge of the 65-foot whaler, the Elin Toril.
Its captain, Norwegian Stig Odimsen, tried to put to sea with these protesters still on board only to find that seven more Greenpeace supporters had attached themselves to a drawbridge in his path.
“We think this boat is an affront to world public opinion and we are not going to let it set sail to kill whales,” Greenpeace campaigner Andy Ottaway said earlier.
The Norwegian crew arrived Monday to support their national delegation at the International Whaling Commission (IWC) annual conference in Glasgow.
