LANCASTER : Ex-Official Says He’s Exploring Fair Post

Former Lancaster Councilman William Pursley, who was fined $16,000 Thursday for conflict-of-interest violations, has acknowledged discussing a possible appointment to the state board that governs the Antelope Valley Fair.

Pursley, 64, a wealthy real estate broker, said last week that he wasn’t sure whether he wanted an immediate appointment to the 50th District Agricultural Assn. board or whether there would be an opening on the panel soon.

But board member Leroy Harrington said this week that he is leaving to become the new manager of the fair’s satellite wagering facility.

Pursley refused to say with whom he held discussions on the appointment, which would be made by Gov. Pete Wilson. But one source said the talks involved Lancaster insurance broker Frank Visco, a former chairman of the state Republican Party.

Pursley was fined by the state Fair Political Practices Commission for voting on matters in which he had a financial interest and for failure to disclose his economic interests.
