San Gabriel : Trash Fees to Increase

Share

To match increased costs for trash collection and disposal, the City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved higher fees for residential and commercial customers.

Effective Aug. 1, the charge for curbside service at a single-family home will climb $2 per month, up 17%. Homeowners with back-yard service will pay $2.30 more per month, up 10.8%.

Businesses will pay more for all bins and barrels. For example, a dumpster with the capacity of three cubic yards will cost $81.80 per month, up 16%.

The new prices partly reflect rising costs at landfills used by San Gabriel Disposal Co., said Ron Arakelian Jr., the company’s vice president.

Puente Hills Landfill in Whittier, used for city rubbish about 70% of the time, has raised dumping fees 5.5% since July, 1991.

BKK Landfill in West Covina, used about 30% of the time, increased fees 16% over the same period.

The disposal company was also allowed a 3.6% upward adjustment, based on the consumer priced index, for the portion of its service that excludes dump fees.
