Huntington Park : Council Delays Utility Tax Pending OK of State Budget
The City Council has postponed plans to impose a utility users tax because of the deadlock in Sacramento over the state budget. Huntington Park and other California cities have been concerned that the state would take money from city governments to help balance the state budget.
Huntington Park has a $1.2-million general fund shortfall and is one of several cities considering a utility tax to generate more revenues. Although the council has yet to decide on the tax percentage, rates can be as high as 11%. A 5% tax on gas, electricity, water, cable television and telephone services in Huntington Park could generate up to $1.9 million.
The council plans to discuss the proposed tax at its meeting July 20 if the state budget has been approved.
