COMPTON : Neighbors Free Girl, 6, From Burning House

Share

Two Compton men on Wednesday freed a 6-year-old girl trapped inside a burning bedroom that had burglar bars on the windows.

“Our fire captain on scene feels (neighbors Robert Owens and Kenneth Hayes) saved the girl’s life,” said Battalion Chief Charles Griswold of the Compton Fire Department. “They even managed to have the fire almost put out by the time we arrived.”

Yahyda Reyes was treated at Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center for first- and second-degree burns following the 10:30 a.m. fire, Griswold said. She and her two younger brothers apparently had been playing with matches, Griswold said, and the “boys got out, but she was trapped.”

Owens went in the back door of the home, entered the bedroom, grabbed the girl, unlatched the burglar bars and handed her to Hayes, Griswold said.
