Nation IN BRIEF : KANSAS : Hail, Winds Pound Midwest; 6 Injured

Hail as big as baseballs and wind blowing up to 100 m.p.h. pummeled Concordia and other areas of northern Kansas, destroying roofs, snapping power lines and injuring at least six people. Storms also rolled across parts of Minnesota, the Dakotas, Iowa and into the Ohio Valley. A state of emergency was declared in Kansas’ Cloud County and the National Guard was called to help to clean up the damage estimated in the millions. Gusts to 74 m.p.h. were reported at Dubuque, Iowa. Hail more than 2 inches in diameter and wind up to 80 m.p.h. damaged three hangars and 12 airplanes at Huron, S.D. Three people were admitted to a hospital while three others were treated in an emergency room.
