Rival Palestinian factions at odds over peace negotiations with Israel clashed anew Saturday in the occupied Gaza Strip despite a day-old truce brokered by outside mediators.

The fighting marked the latest round in a power struggle between the Muslim fundamentalist group Hamas and the Palestine Liberation Organization’s Fatah faction.

Hamas opposes the Fatah-backed autonomy negotiations with Israel as a sellout.

During two weeks of street fighting, one Palestinian has been killed and dozens hurt. Palestinian negotiators say they will lose credibility if fighting continues.

The truce was brokered Friday by a high-level delegation that included members of the Palestinian team negotiating with Israel as well as Arab mayors and legislators from Israel.
