La Jolla Extends Run of ‘Tommy’

The La Jolla Playhouse announced Monday that it has extended the run of the rock-opera “Tommy” by a week.

The musical, which opened last week, has had the highest demand for tickets of any Playhouse production, according to Constance Harvey, a spokeswoman for the theater.

The show, which was originally scheduled to close Aug. 9, has virtually sold out for that portion of the run. It will now continue through Aug. 16, with tickets still available for the extension. Ticket prices have been raised slightly for the added week.

Harvey said that even if the demand for “Tommy” tickets continues, the only way the Playhouse could extend the show further would be to delay the opening of the American premiere of “Playland,” written by renowned South African playwright Athol Fugard.

“We’re not planning to change the planned Aug. 30 opening of ‘Playland’ at this point,” Harvey said.
