Restoring Optimism

Share

Thank you for your July 4 editorial “Never Stop Believing in America.” As you state, “More Americans of more types and stripes have the real opportunity to participate in the political and business system than ever before.” Paradoxically, more Americans seem to despair at their apparent lack of opportunities.

Why is this happening in a nation known historically for its optimistic belief in a better future? I believe a significant portion of the blame lies with the media that focus far more on the problems with America than on our strengths. This helps shape a national mood of increased pessimism.

The Times can become part of the solution. I do not propose that you stop pointing out our problems but ask that you provide some balance and perspective on days other than July 4. Even if everything you print in all your articles about America’s problems is completely true, the picture you present is false if only problems are reported. A more balanced picture of our circumstance can help restore our innate optimism and give us the strength and will to solve our problems.
