WEST HOLLYWOOD : Writers Guild Official Ousted for False Resume

Share

The Writers Guild of America West on Tuesday ousted one of its committee chairmen after determining that he had misrepresented his writing accomplishments when he joined the guild’s East Coast branch in 1988.

Brian McDevitt, 32, had been elected chairman of the guild’s Grants and Foundations Committee largely on the strength of what he reportedly said was a distinguished writing career in the East, including articles in such magazines as the New Yorker and Harper’s and a couple of prestigious awards.

It came to light that McDevitt is a convicted felon who was questioned in a 1990 theft at Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum that involved a dozen masterpieces worth more than $150 million. No charges have been filed in the Gardner case.

The guild had given McDevitt an opportunity to submit proof that his work history was as he had stated, but he did not supply the information.
