Garrison Injured as Games Loom
Zina Garrison limped off the court Wednesday after twisting her ankle in the Pathmark Tennis Classic.
Garrison, 15th ranked in the world, retired after only five games and one point of the exhibition.
The second-round loss, recorded as 3-2 retired, to No. 394 Christine O’Reilly, was hardly on her mind.
“I’m worried about the Olympics,” said Garrison, who was upset that the timing of the injury might force her to miss the trip to Barcelona. “I’ve been looking forward to playing in the Olympics for a long time.”
“Zina has an ankle sprain and a slightly torn ligament,” Dr. Joseph Pizzurro said. “She should be able to hit in four or five days and should be ready to compete at the Olympics.”
Garrison, Jennifer Capriati and Mary Joe Fernandez make up the U.S. women’s tennis team.
