Women Blamed for Drought Attacked

ZINDER, Niger —
Hundreds of people attacked bars and bordellos after militant Muslims declared that immoral women are causing a drought, the official Niger Press Agency said Saturday.
Police imposed a curfew after the mob marched on the homes of local officials and set fire to prostitutes’ homes and the office of a women’s association, state radio said. Three people were injured.
The mob was urged on by Muslim holy men. They said the women’s “indecent” dress and conduct are responsible for lower-than-normal rainfall this year.
