Nation IN BRIEF : TEXAS : Report Says Military Is Slow to Pay Bills

Inspectors at Kelly Air Force Base, Tex., and Ft. Lee, Va., have found unpaid invoices totaling $200 million owed to civilian grocers and vendors around the nation, a newspaper reported. Investigators said that despite the federal Prompt Payment Act, the Defense Department often pays its contractors 60 to 90 days or more late, the Houston Chronicle reported. Officials said the backlog was due largely to the inability of various Army, Navy and Air Force computers to communicate, the newspaper said.
