Orange Coast College’s new Food Science Program has received a $5,150 grant to develop a laboratory manual for its food science class.

The grant was awarded by the Southern California Institute of Food Technologists.

Orange Coast College inaugurated its two-year food science certificate program last fall. The program’s purpose is to get people involved in the food manufacturing industry and to prepare those in the field for advancement, said Jill S. Golden, food science instructor. The college’s food science course is designed to demonstrate basic scientific principles in food processing. Most students are expected to continue their studies at four-year schools that offer bachelor’s degrees in the field, college officials said.
