World IN BRIEF : RUSSIA : Moscow Seeks Sale of Uranium to U.S.
U.S. Energy Department officials and Victor N. Mikhailov, the head of Russia’s Ministry of Atomic Energy, have discussed the potential sale of tons of weapons-grade Russian uranium for possible use in U.S. nuclear power plants, an official with a U.S. environmental group said. Thomas B. Cochran, a senior scientist with the private Natural Resources Defense Council, said a memorandum of understanding was signed and that Mikhailov has lined up several American companies eager to dilute highly enriched Russian uranium from warheads and to sell it as reactor fuel.
