Sony Announces Laser Breakthrough: Sony Corp. says it has tested an advanced laser that could allow compact disks to hold more than three hours of music and revolutionize other consumer electronics. Analysts said the technology could be applied to a range of products, from flat-panel television sets to multimedia systems. “Most people expected it couldn’t be done for another five or 10 years,” said Katsuhiko Sugiyama, senior vice president of research at Lehman Bros. Japan Inc. Current semiconductor lasers emit red or green light. Like a record needle with a sharper point, the new laser emits shorter-wave-length blue light that allows it to read information squeezed more tightly onto a compact disk.
