Decision Delayed on Grocer’s Bid to Resume Liquor Sales

Share

The Compton Planning Commission on Wednesday postponed until September a decision on whether to allow a Korean-American merchant to resume the sale of alcohol at a store that was destroyed during the riots.

The request by Man Suk Sin, 41, is the first to come before a governmental body since the riots. The rebuilding of liquor stores has drawn opposition from several community groups.

Sin’s small liquor store and grocery market on Rosecrans Avenue was looted and burned by rioters April 30. According to Compton regulations, she must obtain a conditional use permit to resume the sale of alcoholic beverages.

The store was among 26 state licensed liquor, beer and wine outlets in Compton shut down by the riots. In Los Angeles, 386 of the 2,887 liquor outlets were destroyed.
