Countywide : New Sports Facility Considered for Park

County officials will consider developing six acres of Yorba Regional Park for sports activities after Anaheim city officials passed on operating a community center on the site.

The county Harbors, Beaches and Parks Commission on Wednesday agreed to ask the Board of Supervisors to solicit proposals from the community on what type of sports facility should be developed. An indoor/outdoor soccer facility is one consideration, said Bob Hamilton, planning manager for the Harbors, Beaches and Parks Department.

Anaheim residents rejected the idea of building a community center at the far west end of the park on La Palma Avenue next to the softball fields, even before county and city officials could hammer out a funding plan for the project, Hamilton said.

“Residents didn’t like the idea of a community center on the north side of the (Santa Ana) river,” said Chris Jarvi, director of the Anaheim parks department. “So we backed off the idea and told the county we were no longer interested in that area.”
