Bavaria’s state government urged Bonn on Friday to press Israel for a document that alleges police, not Palestinian kidnapers, killed Israeli hostages at the 1972 Munich Olympics.

Bavaria asked Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel to ask for a secret German report that the Israeli press has said showed police accidentally shot the athletes during a rescue attempt.

“I consider it unbearable that we are confronted with an alleged document that nobody, for whatever reason, has yet described more closely,” Bavarian Justice Minister Mathilde Berghofer-Weichner wrote in a letter to Kinkel.

A Foreign Ministry spokesman said the request would be passed to the Israeli authorities.

The Israeli newspaper Yediot Aharonot this week reported that classified documents from the Bavarian state prosecutor’s office showed at least eight of the athletes were killed by police trying to rescue them.
