IBM May Split Off PC Division as Subsidiary: IBM may turn its personal computer division into a wholly owned subsidiary, computer industry sources said. The PC division’s managers are considering several options, including the subsidiary structure, to give them more autonomy from IBM’s corporate headquarters, the sources said, speaking on condition of anonymity. As a subsidiary, the division in effect would be a separate company, freeing it from some of IBM’s legendary bureaucracy, the executives said. “It would have the ability to make the day-to-day decisions in a shorter amount of time,” one executive said. IBM spokeswoman Tara Sexton declined to comment specifically on the executives’ comments.
