In Pool B, France beat Spain, 18-16; Romania defeated Egypt, 22-21, and the CIS beat Germany, 25-15, to lead the standings. The U.S. men’s team failed to qualify.

The CIS is favored to win, but Spain was hoping to benefit from a hometown crowd.

The U.S. women, led by Leora (Sam) Jones, have an outside chance at a medal when the women begin play Thursday. Jones was the second leading scorer at Seoul in 1988.
