Court Ends Pittsburgh’s 28-Day Transit Strike
The state Supreme Court on Wednesday affirmed a judge’s order that ended a 28-day transit strike and sent 2,700 bus and trolley drivers back to work in Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, Pa.
The court rejected arguments of Local 85 of the Amalgamated Transit union that the April order unfairly deprived members of the right to strike without submitting the dispute to binding arbitration.
A Commonwealth Court judge, saying the strike was a danger to the public health, safety and welfare, ordered the drivers to work under the old contract while he mediated talks for a new one.
