The Vatican gave the first sign Wednesday that Pope John Paul II will have to slow down the pace of his world travels after major surgery, saying his next overseas trip will be greatly curtailed.

Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro said the Pope will not visit Mexico, Nicaragua and Jamaica in October as part of a trip to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the New World.

Navarro said, however, that the Pope wants to keep a commitment to visit Santo Domingo, in the Dominican Republic, Oct. 12 for a conference of Latin American bishops on the anniversary of Columbus’ landing.
