Homecoming? The U.S. Foreign Legion, otherwise known as the women’s basketball team, winner of the last two gold medals, opens play today against Czechoslovakia.

Of the 12 U.S. players, 11 play professionally overseas.

The 12th, Suzie McConnell, retired to have a baby.

Women’s pro basketball has failed in the United States, and the American women aren’t thrilled about having to wait every four years for a U.S. audience.

“Huh!” said three-time Olympian Teresa Edwards, who plays in Japan. “I don’t know what’s special besides wearing the red, white and blue.

“We go overseas to make our living and we come back and represent the country for nothing, you know?

“We don’t get enough credit for that. The Japanese people feed me. Nobody in the U.S. feeds me. I don’t make a penny here.”
