Alexander Volkov of Russia, who passed up a chance to play at the Olympics because he didn’t think he was good enough, opened play in the U.S. Pro Tennis Championships in Brookline, Mass., with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over D.J. Bosse of South Africa.

In other matches, Eric Amend of San Pedro defeated Jeff Chiang, 6-4, 7-5, in a match of qualifiers, and Jeff Tarango of Manhattan Beach beat Australian Paul Kilverry, 6-0, 7-6 (7-5).

South Africa’s Byron Talbot had to retire when he became ill in the third set against Tim Mayotte.
