ORANGE COUNTY OLYMPIC NOTEBOOK : HOW THE OTHERS FARED

Phil Nevin, Placentia, bumped umpire Jose Sordo’s stomach while arguing a call at third base during the seventh inning of the U.S. baseball team’s 9-6 loss to Cuba. Nevin, the team’s third baseman, was hitless with one RBI in three at-bats.

Chip McKibben, Newport Beach, and three rowing teammates finished first in their quadruple sculls repechage heat, advancing to today’s semifinals.

Mike Lapper, Huntington Beach, and Joe-Max Moore, Irvine, saw their U.S. soccer team fail to qualify for the second round of the tournament despite tying Poland, 2-2. Italy’s 1-0 victory over Kuwait relegated the Americans to third place in their group, eliminating them. Lapper received his second yellow card of the Olympic competition during the U.S.-Poland match. Moore did not score.

Elaina Oden and Kim Oden, Irvine, and Tammy Liley, Westminster, are members of the U.S. volleyball team, which lost its opening match to Japan, 13-15, 15-11, 15-12, 8-15, 15-13. The United States lost a six-point lead in the third and was ahead, 9-5, in the decisive fifth.

Lanee Butler, San Juan Capistrano, had her best finish of the Lechner sailboarding competition in regatta No. 5, finishing second behind New Zealand’s Barbara Anne Kendall, the overall leader. Butler also finished 13th in regatta Nos. 3 and 12 in No. 4. Halfway through the 10-race competition, she is eighth overall.

Dan Henderson, Apple Valley and formerly of Cal State Fullerton, lost to Goran Kasum of Yugoslavia, 2-0, and was eliminated from medal contention in the 82-kilogram (181 pound) weight class of the Greco-Roman wrestling competition.
