Prime Minister Giuliano Amato, trying to save his government’s credibility, rejected calls to resign in a political crisis that has compounded Italy’s emergency over economic problems and the power of the Mafia. Opposition parties called on Amato, whose month-old government commands only a razor-thin 16-seat majority in the lower house, to resign after Foreign Minister Vincenzo Scotti unexpectedly quit Wednesday, sparking fears of further instability for Amato’s fragile coalition.
