Review Missed Crucial Points

I am writing to let you know that on reading your review of “Stop the World--I Want To Get Off,” (Ventura County Life, July 2), I decided to see it, and took my 11-year-old daughter and her friend. Key attraction words in your review were: Marcel Marceau, Charlie Chaplin, Al Jolson, Irving Berlin, Broadway and the London stage. Everyman--a ‘60s musical with luster retained--appealing performances. You make it sound so interesting, so bright.

I feel you should have added another paragraph, something to this effect:

“If a woman dressed in leather snapping a whip, wearing a red swastika arm band and singing songs to ‘Heil Hitler’ doesn’t bother you, then this is the play for you. If you don’t mind seeing (Littlechap) use his daughter as a rack for throwing his coat over when he comes home, then this is the play for you.”

I read your review three times when I got home to see where I had missed the fact that this was a very mean-spirited play. You do the community and the theater a disservice to omit the truth by writing nothing of the Hitler scene or the misogynistic treatment of the girls in the play. It frightens me to think you didn’t even notice this.
