CRIME BUSTERS: With serious crime on the increase (B1), police are touting reward offers as a way to lead to arrests. Gilbert Geis, professor emeritus of social ecology at UC Irvine, recently participated in a national study on the issue. . . . Geis and his colleagues found that four out of five police departments strongly recommend rewards offered by local business as an effective tool to fight serious crimes. But Geis adds: “They are not convinced that most companies will do so.”
