BARCELONA ’92 OLYMPICS / DAY 9 : DAILY REPORT : WATER POLO : All-California Lineup Proves Too Much for Czechoslovakia

Mike Evans of Ontario scored two goals and seven other players in an all-California lineup scored one apiece for the U.S. water polo team during a 9-3 rout of Czechoslovakia in preliminary-round play.

Other goal scorers for the U.S. were Doug Kimbell of Orange, Charlie Harris of Indian Wells, Chris Humbert of Lodi, Terry Schroeder of Agoura Hills, Craig Klass of Danville, Erich Fischer of Reedley and Alex Rousseau of Santa Monica.

Czechoslovakia got into the tournament only as a late replacement for Yugoslavia, which won gold medals in the past two Olympics, but was barred this year because of U.N. sanctions.

“The Czechs have been on an emotional roller coaster for the past several months, not knowing whether they were going to be in the Olympics,” U.S. goalie Craig Wilson said. “They basically have a starting team that can play with anyone, but their weakness is on the bench.”

Australia, which lost to the United States, 8-4, on Saturday, scored a 9-5 victory over France (0-1-1). Italy (1-0-1), one of the favorites in the other six-team pool, scored a 6-4 victory over the Netherlands (0-2).

The United States (2-0) will play France today.

SHOOTING

Czech Wins One-Shot Shootoff; Waldron Falters, Finishes 6th

Petr Hrdlicka of Czechoslovakia needed one shot in a shootoff to beat Kazumi Watanabe of Japan and win the gold medal in Olympic trap shooting at Mollet Del Valles.

Each finished with 219 points, forcing a shootoff in which the first person to miss loses. Hrdlicka hit his first target and Watanabe didn’t.

There also was a shootoff for the bronze medal. Marco Venturini of Italy, the world champion, needed nine shots to beat world record-holder Joerg Damme of Germany.

Jay Waldron, a member of the Army marksmanship unit from Tacoma, Wash., finished sixth with a score of 217. Waldron was in a five-way tie for second entering the 25-target final round, but missed three times. Bret Erickson of Bennington, Neb., finished 16th with 191 points.

The United States concluded the Olympic shooting competition with one gold medal and one silver.

WEIGHTLIFTING

Russian Equals Olympic Record

Victor Tregoubov equaled an Olympic record in the snatch on the way to winning the gold medal in the heavyweight class. He was the fourth competitor from the Commonwealth of Independent States to win a gold medal, but the first from Russia. The others had been won by lifters from Armenia, Moldova and Georgia.

Tregoubov was nearly beaten by another CIS lifter, Timour Taimazov of Ukraine, who failed with a final lift that would have given him victory. He won the silver, and the bronze went to Poland’s Waldemar Malak.

Tregoubov’s total of 903 3/4 pounds from his two best lifts included a snatch of 418 3/4, tying the Olympic record set by Pavel Kuznetsov of the Soviet Union at Seoul. His best for the clean and jerk was 485 pounds.

“This is something I really wanted,” Tregoubov said. “I have not taken a break or a holiday since last year, and I have trained day in and day out for this.”

Taimazov also tried to match the Olympic snatch record, but failed and totaled 887 1/4 pounds.

Malak, who danced on the podium after he received his bronze medal, totaled 881 3/4 pounds for third to edge France’s Francis Tournefier, who had 854 1/4.

Wes Barnett of St. Joseph, Mo., finished 15th with a total of 777 pounds, less than the 782 1/4 he lifted at the Olympic trials. David Langdon of Castro Valley, Calif., failed on all three attempts at a 330 1/2-pound snatch.

TEAM HANDBALL

CIS, Sweden Improve to 4-0

The Commonwealth of Independent States, Sweden and Iceland remained undefeated in pool play. The CIS, 4-0 in Pool B, beat Spain, 24-18; Sweden, 4-0 in Pool A, got past Hungary, 25-21, and Iceland, 3-0-1 in Pool A, beat South Korea, 26-24.

In other games, France beat Romania, 26-20; Germany topped Egypt, 24-16, and Czechoslovakia defeated Brazil, 27-16.

Competition continues on Tuesday, with the key game between Sweden and Iceland. The CIS will play Romania (1-2-1).

TABLE TENNIS

Top Swedish Players Advance

Sweden’s Jorgen Persson and Jan-Ove Waldner, the top two table tennis players in the world last year, advanced to the quarterfinals in Olympic men’s singles. Persson, seventh in the 1988 Games and the world champion last year, defeated Steffen Fetzner of Germany, 21-13, 21-17, 21-11, during the second round. Waldner, eighth in the 1988 Games and No. 2 last year, advanced with a 21-15, 21-14, 21-15 victory over Carl Lustig Prean of Britain.
