The question of what American sprinter Gwen Torrence said, and what she meant when she said it, remained unanswered Monday night, even as Torrence issued a statement to clarify comments attributed to her.

If you’re confused, get in line. No one knows for sure who Torrence was referring to when she said on Saturday that three other runners in the 100-meter final were using drugs.

At that time Torrence, who finished fourth, indicated at first that two runners who finished ahead of her were not clean. When asked if Gail Devers, the gold medalist, was one of the two, Torrence said no.

However, according to Juliet Cuthbert of Jamaica, Torrence did mean Devers.

Cuthbert, who won the silver medal, said Torrence told her on Monday that she was referring to Devers and Irina Privalova of the Commonwealth of Independent States, the silver medalist.

The Jamaican said Torrence approached her at the practice track while warming up for the 200 meters.

Torrence would not comment to reporters after her 200 race, but later acknowledged speaking with Cuthbert.

“I did tell her that I suspected there were three people in the final who were competing unfairly, but I will not say names,” Torrence’s statement said.

Torrence intimated she was concerned about retribution.

The U.S. Olympic Committee had no comment.
