COUNTYWIDE : Initiative Calls for More Deputies
Without discussion, the County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday unanimously voted to place an initiative on the November ballot that calls for increasing the ratio of deputies and correctional officers to population starting in 1994.
The proposal calls for increasing the ratio from 1.16 deputies per thousand to 1.5 by 1994, and tops out at 2.25 officers per thousand by 1998. County officials say the measure will cost about $12 million to $14 million a year.
The ballot initiative will join another measure in November that is designed to block new demands for services that do not include money to pay for themselves. The measure for new deputies does not include a funding source.
