Sun Microsystems Reports Lower Earnings: The Mountain View-based firm, a leader in the $12-billion workstation market, reported net income for its fourth-quarter ended June 30 plunged 43.2% to $37.7 million, or 37 cents a share, from $66.4 million, or 63 cents, in the same period last year. Revenue rose 3.2% to $972.7 million from $942.5 million. The results were below analysts’ expectations. The results reflect Sun’s introduction of a new workstation model, SparcStation 10, which was introduced May 19 but isn’t due for substantial shipments until the current quarter. Sun said results were also hurt by discounts on older workstations, which the company was anxious to clear out.
